THE SEASON SO FAR

Anthony Black’s opening stretch of the 2025-26 campaign was defined by maddening inconsistency, swinging violently between suffocating point-of-attack dominance and crippling offensive passivity. When he actively hunted his shot, the results were spectacular. He peaked on 11/25 vs PHI, where a devastating mix of perimeter shot-making and downhill attacks yielded 31 points and a massive +13.0 impact score. Even when his scoring volume dipped, he could still dictate terms through sheer defensive will. His +5.5 impact mark on 11/07 vs BOS was built almost entirely on non-scoring value, hijacking the opponent's rhythm with relentless, suffocating ball pressure. Conversely, his box score production frequently masked a deeply flawed process. Look no further than 11/16 vs HOU, where he managed a respectable 18 points but posted a -4.9 impact because terrible three-point shot selection and glaring defensive rotational errors actively harmed the team. Until Black learns to balance his elite defensive instincts with a reliable offensive identity, he will remain a highly volatile rotation piece.

Anthony Black's midseason promotion to the starting lineup triggered a stretch of chaotic, Jekyll-and-Hyde basketball. He looked like a legitimate superstar on 12/27 vs DEN, dropping 38 points to generate a staggering +23.3 impact score. That massive positive value stemmed directly from a masterclass in shot selection and lethal perimeter execution. The brilliance rarely lasted, however. During an ugly outing on 01/07 vs BKN, he managed just five points on 2-of-11 shooting, resulting in a brutal -11.5 impact score. His elite point-of-attack defense in that contest was entirely overshadowed by a disastrous offensive showing. Even when his counting stats looked respectable, hidden costs often wrecked his actual value on the floor. Look no further than 01/18 vs MEM, where a 19-point performance completely masked a disastrous -13.2 impact score driven by poor defensive rotations.

Anthony Black’s midseason stretch was defined by a maddening Jekyll-and-Hyde routine, oscillating violently between suffocating two-way brilliance and total offensive ineptitude. The ugliness peaked early on 01/22 vs CHA. He posted a catastrophic -18.3 impact score that night. That massive negative rating stemmed directly from atrocious shot selection, as he forced heavily contested looks to finish an abysmal 1-for-11 from the floor. Yet, he completely flipped the script on 01/28 vs MIA by racking up 26 points and generating a stellar +17.2 impact. Relentless point-of-attack defensive pressure and highly efficient finishing drove that dominant rating. Unfortunately, those flashes were repeatedly undone by apathetic outings like 02/22 vs LAC. Despite a respectable 11 points, he logged a brutal -16.9 impact because his invisible defensive effort and empty offensive possessions actively dragged the entire lineup down.

IMPACT TIMELINE

Game-by-game performance vs average. Green = above average, red = below.

PATTERNS

Boom-or-bust player. Black's impact swings wildly relative to his average — some nights dominant, others invisible. Scoring varies by ~8 points per game.

Middle-of-the-road efficiency — shoots 45%+ from the field in 53% of games. Not automatic, but not a problem either.

Defensive difference-maker. Black consistently forces tough shots and protects the rim — opponents shoot worse when he's guarding them.

Slight upward trend. First-half impact: -2.0, second-half: +0.6. Modest improvement — possibly settling into a rhythm.
