THE SEASON SO FAR

Kevin Huerter spent the first quarter of the season trapped in a frustrating tug-of-war between the starting lineup and the bench, searching for a consistent rhythm. When his shot betrayed him, he occasionally found other ways to survive. On 10/25 vs ORL, he missed all four of his three-point attempts but still posted a stellar +9.6 impact score by shifting into a gritty facilitator role, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing six assists. That all-around hustle briefly earned him a starting nod, peaking on 11/11 vs SAS with a season-high 23 points and a massive +14.5 impact. Yet, his offensive outbursts often came with hidden costs. Take his 10/27 vs ATL performance, where an efficient 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting masked a dismal -6.1 impact score due to a complete lack of rebounding and poor defensive effort. By December, he was back in a reserve role, desperately trying to string together reliable minutes. If Huerter wants to reclaim a permanent starting job, he needs to realize that scoring is only half the battle.

Kevin Huerter’s midseason stretch was defined by maddening perimeter inconsistency, oscillating wildly between an essential floor-spacer and an outright offensive liability. When thrust into the starting lineup on 01/08 vs DET, he completely misfired. Huerter bricked all six of his three-point attempts, dragging his Impact down to a dismal -12.4 because of empty possessions and poor shot selection. Yet, he occasionally found ways to contribute when his jumper abandoned him. During the 01/04 vs CHA game, he scored only 9 points on 3-for-11 shooting, but salvaged a +0.2 Impact by crashing the glass for 11 rebounds and setting up teammates with 7 assists. When his shot actually fell, his ceiling changed entirely. He torched the defense on 01/29 vs MIA, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds to generate a massive +16.4 Impact fueled by relentless effort on the boards and confident perimeter execution. Ultimately, trusting Huerter in the rotation right now remains a massive gamble.

This late-season stretch was defined by maddening inconsistency, with Huerter oscillating wildly between detrimental bench stints and sudden bursts of offensive brilliance. His erratic shot selection often sank the second unit, a flaw glaringly evident during the 04/04 vs PHI matchup. Despite logging six assists in that contest, his abysmal 2-for-9 shooting and forced perimeter looks dragged his Impact down to a dismal -10.3. Yet, when he stopped settling for bad threes and attacked with purpose, his overall value skyrocketed. During the 03/19 vs WAS game, Huerter missed both of his deep attempts but shot an efficient 6-of-10 overall, pairing 14 points with active rebounding to post a massive +19.8 Impact. He even found a rhythm when thrust into the starting five. On 03/26 vs NOP, he exploded for 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, generating a +11.7 Impact simply by catching fire and punishing sluggish defensive closeouts.
