THE SEASON SO FAR

Jaden Hardy’s early season was defined by brutal inconsistency, as he struggled to find rhythm or positive value during sporadic minutes off the bench. When his jumper abandoned him, the results were painful. His 11/23 vs MEM performance epitomized these struggles, where he put up zero points on 0-for-5 shooting to generate a disastrous -16.6 Impact score. Because Hardy offers so little in terms of playmaking or defensive resistance, his negative impact scores ballooned whenever he forced bad shots and failed to convert. Yet, just when it seemed he might fall out of the rotation entirely, he would suddenly catch fire. He poured in 17 points on a blistering 4-for-5 from deep during the 11/18 vs MIN game for a +2.0 Impact, then erupted weeks later in the 12/06 vs OKC matchup. In that contest, Hardy dropped 23 points on sharp 8-for-13 shooting, earning a stellar +11.2 Impact score because his elite shot-making finally outweighed his typical tunnel vision. Unfortunately, those brilliant scoring flashes were mostly buried under a mountain of empty possessions.

Jaden Hardy spent the middle chunk of the season trapped in a maddening cycle of empty-calorie volume shooting. Look no further than his performance on 02/26 vs ATL. He tallied 14 points in 28 minutes, but a brutal -12.7 impact score reveals the hidden cost of his disastrous 5-for-19 shooting display. He dragged the offense into the mud with selfish possessions, a recurring theme that also plagued his 19-point start on 01/16 vs UTA. Despite his high scoring total that night, his -3.6 impact stemmed from hoisting 13 three-point attempts just to find the bottom of the net four times. However, Hardy can actually help a basketball team when he stops forcing the issue. During the 01/28 vs MIN game, he recorded a +2.7 impact score while scoring just 11 points. His value finally spiked in the positive direction because he operated within the flow of the offense, taking only eight carefully selected shots and actively hustling on defense instead of merely hunting his own looks.

Jaden Hardy’s late-season stretch was defined by empty-calorie scoring and maddening inconsistency as a one-dimensional bench gunner. When his jumper caught fire, he looked like a legitimate spark plug, erupting for 25 points on 03/22 vs NYK to generate a +7.3 Impact score. But that same trigger-happy approach frequently sabotaged his team. Just three days later on 03/25 vs UTA, he poured in 21 points but dragged the lineup down with a dismal -9.3 Impact score. That negative rating stemmed directly from his extreme tunnel vision and selfish shot selection, as he hoisted 18 attempts without recording a single assist. His floor completely collapsed when he wasn't actively hunting baskets. During a bizarre stint on 03/16 vs GSW, Hardy logged 12 cardio-filled minutes without attempting a single field goal or grabbing a rebound, resulting in a catastrophic -18.8 Impact score due to his total lack of off-ball engagement and defensive apathy.
